Worried mother here (Should I be freaking out? or chilling out?)

ecb Oct 20, 2003 11:28 AM

I have been feeding Erowen, because since she laid the eggs she has not gone after any food, and before she laid them she only ate the one worm that I saw for a LONG time
but she seems to have NO energy
if I put her in the tank on the branch, she is still there huors later
last ngiht she looked dry, so I put her in the water, I actually saw her putting her head down on the floor of the pool, with the water lapping on her nostrils, so I nudged her to shallower water, and she slept with her head on the edge of the pool (I will post a pic when I get home) she was still in the water when I left this am
her color is not all that bad, but I have also not seen any poop from her (I was ok with her soaking, thinking that she was trying to knock loose a stool specimen)
She snaps her worms in pieces, but she does still open her mouth for me (I thought worms would be better for her than Lamb, but I still give a little Pedialyte) and she is still on the Pancure for one more week
Should I be freaking out? or chilling out?
She does jump and move around when she is out of the tank, but that seems to be when she does not want more food (not that she likes having me tickle her mouth open, and put a worm in there)
and she has snapped at my finger (she has strong jaws, SNAP SNAP!) but she is not profiling for me, so I M less cncerned than I would be if she seemed hostile at my aproach
Do any of you think I M being too agresive with her?
or not worried enough?

BTW eggs all look orange, and none are deflating, or changing color or texture
Temps 67-76, mostly at 72

IT does take some time to see an increase in energy. Some jump right back and others seem to take longer. I will say that my CB girls have seemed to take to it much better than some of my WC but then some of my WC have exhibited excellent health from the beginning and also bounce back quickly.

I would continue the electrolytes and have made a few other suggestions for you in an earlier post.

so, after reading my post lower down you will want to dose with electrolytes, calcium, and love. Mist frequently as that may also stimulate her. It can take a week or two for them to get back to normal and then she will probably be working on clutch #2 so you will want to continue giving her the best nutrients possible to keep her in peak health. Make sure that when se does resume eating normally that she is given unlimited access to food. I have some females that will eat as many as 4 nightcrawlers at a time when they are producing eggs. The earthworm has such high moisture content that they have to eat a lot to get enough. This is great though as they need the moisture, the worms have extra calcium, and they really like them!

If you continue to feel concerned just post and I'll try to help you decide if you should be worried. I would say that for now she is just vegging and trying to rest.

Oh, as for the threatening bites, some of my females are a bit testy when they are gravid. Until you are sure she is done will all possible clutches from this breeding you should only handle as needed. I would keep up the meds until treatment is complete and would make sure she is getting something in her. The pediolyte and calcium are the top priority and may just be what it takes to get her appetite back up.

Pedialyte 3cc with a bit of the Calcium D2 dust in it (not a lot, I do not want to OD her on D2)
and I coated the nightcrawler with dust too. She did bite it into pieces, but she left the last part hanging out of her moutn Ethowin style for a few min, then she jerked her head, pulling it into her mouth and swallowed it while staring at me, and then made a great escape attempt
Tonight I will dust the worm with 1/2 reptical, and 1/2 reptivite
She slept where I put her again, except she did climb up to her (nonlumpy) favorite sleeping spot on the branch
She DOES grip me and avoid being put down when I try to put her in the tank
and the eggs temps are still stable, and I mist them to keep them moist as well (not soaking in standing water, but so the top of the vermiculite is damp, and sticking together)
no dimpling on the eggs, and they are not drying out enough for the dirty spots to brush off

*am I gonna be worse than this when MY children (the human ones) go through this?*
