Can a uro be too fat?

peanutbuttermdc Oct 20, 2003 12:46 PM

I have a very pudgy male mali that eats and eats. He is 11.5 inches and weighs 325g. He just actually looks fat on the edges. So is there a point when he is too fat?

He's a vegetarian!!!! Unless your feeding him lots of crickets, he's fine. If you are feeding him a wide variety of greens and legumes, then you have a healthy lizard. Our Mali uromastyx is 14 inches and weighs almost 3 pounds. They can really get big.

He doesn't like crickets. He just eats lots of different types of greens and frozen veggies. He absolutely loves peas and dandelions. He just eats all the time it seems.

Actually, I spoke to Doug Dix about this at the Daytona Show and YES you can have an obese uro and YES it can be dangerous. But there is a line between obese and just chubby. He said to watch out for the back legs, if they start getting really fat it is very bad. If the uro becomes so fat that it's mobility is limited, it is likely to suffer congestive heart failure. And my uros are on all-veggie diets. The older male and female are both chubby like nobody's business, and they eat the same amount that the younger female does and she is not fat at all. Some uros are built differently, just like people. hope this helped.

get rid of those peas. Peas are a bad idea unless you are TRYING to get your uro to gain weight. They are very high in fatty materials and very low in nutrition.
