average size and weight?

Syren Oct 20, 2003 01:11 PM

While not new to snakes, and herps in general, I got my first BRB last month, a female. I was told she was cb and 7 months old. What should her weight and lenghth be now? She seems small to me, as compared to the other pics I've seen on this forum. She's in a sweater box, 90% humidity, avg. 78 degrees, and eats two fuzzies twice a week.
Thanks for your guidance.

Syren,
. BRBs are born around 18 inches in length. They should be fed so that they grow 1 to 2 inches per month. One that has been fed for this growth would be around 25 to 32 inches long in 7 months. I have seen some that have grown very slowly due to smaller rations when young and they have turned out to be healthy but slightly smaller than average adults.

Thanks so much Mr. Clark for your response. I weighed her tonight, and she's 64grams and 24" long. Should I be feeding her more, or more frequently? As I said, she eats two fuzzies twice a week.

I forgot to mention, she came from Outback Reptiles, and I purchased her at the annual Mid Atlantic Reptile Show in Timonium Maryland. She has shed twice since I've had her.

Syren,
. I feed young BRBs so that they grow 1 to 2 inches per month. Feed her whatever it takes to get a growth rate in that area. They can eat amazingly large meals and IMO pinky and fuzzy mice are pretty small meals for them. At 24 inches they can eat a jumbo mouse but I think a small adult mouse or crawler rat is a better choice because they are less likely to puke when fed medium sized meals. Mine actually are more likely to eat a small adult mouse than a pinky or fuzzy. If you move up to larger food than fuzzy mice you can probably feed her less often than you now are and also can probably get more meat for the money than what you are spending on fuzzy mice. If you raise your own mice and have plenty of them the price issue is not as important.

Thanks again.
Up until now I've been going to the local pet shop for feeders, which is, as you know, quite expensive.
I'm about to place my first order with Rodentpro for frozen feeders. So, for my little BRB, fuzzy rats would be a better choice? If so, how often should I feed her?
I do have mice 1 male, 3 females, but they havent' bred yet, as I've only had them a couple weeks.

Syren,
. How often to feed depends upon the size of the meal. If a young Rainbow sheds every 20 to 40 days and grows an inch or two per month then you know you have a reasonable feeding schedule.
