Feeding

Krawf4 Oct 20, 2003 02:08 PM

I am having a little trouble feeding some of my hatchlings. They are about 2 months old and have only eaten once. I have tried everything i can think of. I have used lizard maker and that only worked once i have tried chicken broth, braining the pinkies and cutting the head clean in half. I tried force feeding and i dont know if i am doing anything wrong but i open the mouth and put the food in and push it back some but once i ease up the push the mouse out of their mouth. Anyone have any tips on how to get them to eat or any reasons why they might not be eating? The containers are at about 82 and they are separated.
Thanks,
Kyle

I had a baby hognose that ate one pinky, thus becoming a 'confirmed feeder.' After I bought him on Nov. 3, he wouldn't eat until Feb. 25, when he took a pinky wrapped in frog skin. And he was TINY -- littler than a baby cornsnake, even.

They just live on absorbed yolk for roughly EVER. They'll decide to eat on their own. Obviously if my hognose can go 3, almost 4 months without food, and not lose weight or become ill, your corns can be left to decide for themselves when they want to eat. Unless they're losing weight, try to relax, or you'll stress them so that they won't eat at all.

Best of luck, and don't freak out.

paper bag with the pinky, closing down the top either by stapling it (watch out for the snake) or taping it and then putting the whole thing into their tank overnight? How about putting the pinky and the snake into a deli cup and leaving it overnight? Do you have them housed separately or together? How big a tank are they in? If it is too big, they can get stressed, if they are housed together they can get stressed. And a stressed snake can starve itself to death.

How often are you trying to feed? You should not be trying to feed more than two times a week, at the most. How often are you handling them? Until they are feeding, leave them totally alone in a quiet part of the house. Make sure that your temps are good, with adequate small sized hide boxes on both temp zones.
