The baby mali...i need someone fast! read on

fruitionx Oct 20, 2003 03:13 PM

Hello,
Ok i went back to petsmart today and basically told them that this baby would die. Then i proceeded to let them know how i called the aspca on them already and that an investigator was comign out tomorrow. Which made them pretty mad. Then i said that they should give me the mali at least beacause i felt it was able to be saved. They were very reluctant but did give it to me. They refused to give me anyhting to house it in for the trip home however. Whatever at least i saved the little man. He is only 6 grams by the way i just weighed him. So getting back to my story. I then put him in my pocket since i had nothing to put him in. Luckily i had my school pants on which are loose fitting. Then went right next store to staples and bought him a rubbermaid container so at least he would have a house when we got home too. He is so tiny i cannot get over it. I am about to go and try and feed him and also try to get a little fluid in him just to make sure. But i really need soemone to take this little guy i am really over my head with my lizards and school and EVERYTHING that is going on. I cannot say anything about the health of this man, but i can say that he is tiny and i think will be good in the long run. Please if you are in the area of Monmouth County, NJ (central jersey by the shore) please please let me know. I suppose i can ship him but he is VERY small. 6 grams is less than even some of my baby leos. please email me at FruitionX@aol.com, call me 908 601 2864 my cell, or just post if you are interested. Calling me will let me tell you his story and set up any arrangements the fastest. I justreally want his man to go to a good home, he is free. If i need to ship you must pay everythign as i really cannot afford anything else. Please someone giev this man a home! He will be very tame when he grows up
Please help him out he has had a horrible life already.
Thank you for reading this.
I will try and post a picture later he is so cute.

ok, i know i posted alot to my own message but now i am excited for this little fellow. I just gave him decent conditions and he just ate some calcium dusted dandelion greens from my fingers!! i have never been able to do this with a uro given mine are all WC. But i really think he is going to be ok, the only thing is when i was watching him eat i think he has a cleft missing from the front of his mouth. it kinda dips in not much and sure doesnt hinder him. Just to let any perspective adopters know.
Well good news only within an hour!!!
See what correct conditions lead to?

Hi,
I'm so glad you were able to save the poor little guy! Too many times do large pet stores mistreat their animals. I just bought 2 millipedes from Petco because they had them living with lizards (can you talk about stressful?) and were feeding them dried lettuce! No nuitrion whatsoever. I would take the little guy, but I live in MA, so you'd have to ship him. If you can't find anyone in your area to take him, let me know. Thank you for doing something to save him!

as you know i also have malis hatchlings. If you want you could ship him here so he could have some buddies. And if they are good enough buddies maybe the little guy will produce some nice babies with one of my guys. If this happens i would be hapy to give you one. What i am trying to say is i would love to take the little guy. The only thing is you would have to ship him to Chicago. If i end up getting him i would definatly send you some pics and if i learn i would post some pics on the forum. I just feel so bad becuase breeders are trying so hard to produce CB uros and this is how they are treated.

As noted in the response to Flavia be very careful housing a possibly sick Uro with others, especially hatchlings! You could end up with a bunch of dead babies which would be absolutely horrible. If you take him make sure to quarantine him for at least a month (in a seperate room and wash your hands before and after handling), preferably 90 days. Also, I would try and fatten him up before shipping him if possible. Congratulations on saving him, I hope he does well.

Hi Lauren,

Since you know already, I"m from jersey, I might be able to take him off your hands and fatten him up before he can be shipped to someone else. I just graduated college so I'm moving back to my parents house tomorrow. (they're the ones in north jersey).

If you can't afford to keep him until he can be sent to someone else, I might be able to take him. I can't guarentee that I won't fall madly in love with him though! Let me know how long you can keep him before you absolutely need someone to take him!

You are definately a saint for saving him! Good luck!

Thanks georgio for the advice. At the momment i am only houseing 2 of the 3 hatchlings together. I would definatly quarantine him for at least 90 days. I am probably going to keep all my hatchlings separated for the next 6-8 months because of size differneces and agression. By the time they are all nearing 12 months old i will mix and match them and see which ones get along. So if i get the hatchling it would be quarantined for 90 days, and separated from the others for 6-8 months.

PS
if you are going to ship the hatchling i think you should do it soon if the little guy is strong enough because it is going to be getting cold soon and shipping a uro in freezing temps is very risky.

PSS
You said that the hatchling was only 6 grams. When mine hatched they were 6 grams, and by week two they varied from 6-8 grams. So this is either a two week old or its growth has been stunted to a degree. !WARNING! FEED ADULT POOP. i doubt that the breeder fed the hatchling that. If it wasn't fed the poop it will suffer long term. So feed it some dried crumpled adult poop. Go to deer fern farms for all the details.

Great news, but first off thank you all for your support, and offers to help me and the little guy out. But to the good news. My mom who doesn't care for my lizard collection in the first place fell in love with the little guy. She felt so bad for what had already been done to him, she is going to let me keep the little one and pay for any of his needs. So this weekend i am goign out to buy a real hoem for the little one. I will post before pics and after. He is a sweetie though. Havign had onyl WC uros i am amazed! Once i brought the little one home, i put in a slate rock basking light hide etc. I placed him on the rock to warm up, which probably hasnt happened ever in his sort life, since he only has a 30 watt in the store. Then i decided to try out feeding him. which originally i thought wouldn;t happen since he was so weak. To my amzement i held out a small piece of dandelion green which he ate from my hand!! So cute, he then proceeded to act more and more like a hatchling should, FAST and a little more wild. He is a cutie and the first lizard my mom really fell in love with. I am having high hopes for him, and in the future may need a home for but until he gets bigger, he is my little one. 6 grams only, but a nice little guy. From 30 watt heated, calci sand, no basking spot and crickets all over him, lethargic and sick looking, to one hour later, in a paper towel 100 watt heated, basking spot and hide included, eating greens like mad and running around. Shows how they will thrive in the correct conditions. Right now he is in a rubbermaid container, but friday or saturday i will go out to a different petsmart and find him a nice enclosure.
I am excited to have my first CB/first mali/first hatchling uro!
Thanks again everyone, this fourm has proved to be a great one.

Good luck!! This could prove to be quite an undertaking, as Malis live pretty long!! It sounds like he's going to make it... please post some pictures I really want to see how little it is!!

Did you think of any names for him yet? Also, it is very important that you feed the little guy dried poop. He needs this to inoculate his guts. If you dont do this he will suffer in the long run. I just want to make sure you do this because if you dont do this this happy story could end with a sad ending. Take a look at the breeding section in Deer Fern Farms, and somewhere there it tells you how to care for hatchlings. Good luck with the little guy.
