my albino's starting to strike

DVLnBLKvans Oct 20, 2003 03:47 PM

ALright, I've had my new Albino corn for about a month now. It's still a baby though, but it's starting to strike when I go to pick it up. It almost won't let me near it at all, even if I'm cleaning its waste out of the tank. He did eat a big pinky and is still a little fat from it... Could that be why he's getting aggressive? The store I bought it from doesn't sell bigger snakes captive bred, but I'm not real sure if they captive breed the corns. Maybe that would be why. Even so, is there a way to get him to stop striking, he was a magnificantly gentle and curious snake before. Any info would be helpful... Thank you

I had an amelanistic that way and it was one i hatched so i know it was captive breed and hatched. It would strike at me but once i was able to pick it up and hold it it was fine. Just try to move slowly and scoop it up. If you hold it enough it should calm down. Younger snakes tend to strike a lot more than adults, atleast in my experience.

What do you do when he strikes at you? If you back off, then he learns that striking works. So go ahead and pick him up, you can use latex gloves if you are scared of getting bitten.

Make sure that he is awake before you pick him up. A startled snake will strike.

How long ago did he eat? If it is less than 48 hours before this, then I would wait until after that to pick him up. A snake with a full belly is vulnerable to predators. Let him digest the food and poop before you pick him up.

ANother thing to consider is if he is going into a shed cycle? If so, leave him alone as he cannot see very well and is feeling pretty grouchy.

What are your temps in the tank? If it is too hot, it makes them aggressive.

Hope some of this helps.
