Niki and EJ - humidity topic

Nikki22 Oct 20, 2003 04:04 PM

Hello I just read your guys post, was out of town and then had trouble accessing the site. I've actually talked to both of you a little bit on the last forum - kass was my name (x-boyfriend's dog, hence the name change.)

Anyway,
Hamlet's indoor habitat is the floor of a 6' X 8' room, I keep the house at sixty three and he has a ceramic heat lamp. So right under there is usually around 100, the coldest spot in the room usually about 75. He generally chooses to sleep directly underneath the heat lamp. Niki I understand where your coming from, living from Florida and all, but when it is 30 degrees outside in MO and your heater is kicking, if I don't have a humidifier on at night I wake up parched with dry skin and chapped lips. I can only assume Hamlet feels the same affect (I can tell my dogs do as well.) In the summer when he spends his days outside in the hot humid weather, kinduv like Florida, I don't soak him as he will crawl in a shallow water bowl if he needs it, and we make mud puddles for fun sometimes!

In the winter I usually use a combo of humidifying the house in general and soakings to keep him moist and prevent stones.

It was always my understanding that hatchling needed to be soaked like 3 times a week and adults on a somewhat regular basis.

The bottom line is that I believe that the Desert type tortoises should be kept dry with the option of water and humidity always present. I can't see how you can go wrong with that setup.
