i have a quick question if u have raised 2 leos at the same time.........

angl2001 Oct 20, 2003 05:25 PM

i was wondeing about getting another leo from the smae batch and stor i got rey. but i heard when they are bigger if they are 2 males they will fight and also that its not good to house a male and female unless they are breeding. if i get another one he already knows and raise them together in the same tank (i have a 30 gal right now) will they be ok when they get bigger????

First off, Rey is a good looking boy. It's no difference to Rey whether he 'knows' another gecko or not. They're instinctual animals, not people. Don't take that the wrong way, I still anthropomorphize mine.

I think you need to wait until he gets older, or get another cage. You've hit on the reasons I say this. If you get another male, they will eventually start fighting, or pressuring each other into one of them not eating. I've seen a male who was housed with another one and he just wasted away to bones. He didn't even start eating again after being separated.

If Rey is in fact male, and you get a female around his size, they're likely to breed next year before she is ready and you'll constantly struggle to keep weight on her until Sep/Oct next year when they natuarally stop breeding for the year. The egg-bearing/laying alone could be too much strain on her small body.

For now, until you get another cage or Rey grows up a little, enjoy him for the great little guy that I'm sure he is. Good luck.

i have 2 males that have been growing up together in a cage. i dont recomment it but it is an experiment to see if they can live together as long as they have been together for life. they are almost 35 grams now and i monitor them closely and havent ever caught them scuffle or fight.
