want to buy a health african sideneck

scarface5011 Oct 20, 2003 06:29 PM

Hi all, found some caresheet info online tonight, mainly water temps, air temps, humidity (which I find silly since the aquarium should keep the air moist enough), basking light temps and UV exposure. Foods to eat and avoid and all that.

Biggest question: Do they hibernate? Do they need to? Do we have to encourage them to, by dropping water temps? I have wanted a sideneck for a long time (my wife and I have had a Rhinoclemmys pulcherina-ornate wood turtle for over 4 years, and she's the hardest turtle to care for. We do it, but its a lot of work! I'm sure the sideneck care isn't easy, but I've wanted an aquatic turtle forever.

If anyone can help, thanks alot!

Hello,

Being a Sub-Sahara African Species, Pelusios side-necks do not require hibernation nor should this be attempted. As far as care, If healthy, your African side-neck should be easy. The are eager feeders and your fish should disappear VERY quickly when added to the Aquarium.

Good Luck,
Sincerely,
Brian
