Ideas for feeding Savannah

Travis12321 Oct 20, 2003 07:27 PM

I have a question. I am going to get a savannah that is around 2-3 feet. I hear it is good to feed them cat/dog food, but my mom wont let me because she says it stinks. What is a good CHEAP alternative to this? I know I can feed fuzzie mice, if I feed these about how many would it eat in a week?
Thanks alot.
Travis

Thats your good cheap alternative. You dont sound ready for a monitor. The Bosc that youre looking at will eat many adult mice throughout the week. Dog and cat food is very bad for reptiles. Your mom thinks canned pet food smells bad. She gonna KILL you the first time your lizard dismembers a mouse and lets it cook under the lights all day while youre at school or spending the night at a friends. Its a formula for disaster. Not to mention the 6-8 foot sized cage taking up a bunch of space. I dont think you mom is going to like that idea very much.

Do some research here at kingsnake or at some other sites ill list for you. Take your time, and really think about how you can provide for the kind of pet you want. You should also think about emergency vet visits. Its a good rule of thumb to have at least 500- 1000 set aside per critter, just in case you need it to save its life in the event it needs mending. Not to mention all this, but think about why you want a particular pet, and see if its for less than honorable reasons like to impress your friends, etc.

Animals are not disposable. They are a lifetime commitment. Choose wisely!

All the best,
Michelle

The titles of the two posts-

Tips for feeding savanna monitor?
-Bearded dragons or leopard geckos!

A good rule of thumb is to never feed a savanna monitor a bearded dragon wider than the space between its eyes to avoid the dreaded agamid impaction syndrome...

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?
