This eastern garter was caught last year in central nebraska. Any clues whats going on here genetically?
I photographed it at a recent herp show.

I have no idea...just wondering why this never happens to me! Gorgeous snake though...are you sure its an eastern and not a plains variation?

Do you have a headshot? the white with black eyes would tell me leucistic. But that orange is totally alien to any garter I have seen.More pics if you have them.
Thanks Tom
P.S. Do you know who owns this snake?
It would be a Plains Garter would it not? But regardless, the mutation is seen in Asian Elaphe (E. taeniura) and has been referred to as "calico" Several other species have been found exhibiting what I believe to be the same mutation (Eastern Milksnakes, Chinese Watersnakes, etc) But it has been proven heritable with the Beauties. There is a picture of an animal resembling this one (with alot less white) in Bechtel's book on Mutations. Neat animal. Too bad it is in a collection that will allow this amazing morph to dissappear with it's death.
