Urgent help needed for Hohelli chameleon rescue!

59herps Oct 20, 2003 08:51 PM

Hey all,
basically i have a rescue from a pet store. Its a female hohelli chameleion that has its left eye swollen to the size of a grape this swelling occurred over a week at the pet store and they eventually gave it to me. Shes eating a little and her right eye is swelling a little bit also. I can't see a good exotic animal vet for another week, and help or advice is appreciated. the eye is swollen and once and awhile releases sticky watery liquid. I think its a vitamin deficiancy but i am not sure.
thanks,
Devlin

If your taking an animal that is already ill then you should at least be able to get it medical attn. As it is he will suffer another week not at the store but at your house without any medical attn.
Either put it down (euthanize, kill destroy) or find a way to get it to a vet.
Regardless of how bad an animal looks/is you should leave it with the store.
All this sounds cold but thats the tuth no matter how you look at it..

I am well aware of that, I have some thirty medications i was basically wondering what one to give and how much or if anyone has had a similair problem. I ended up using flagyl for the internal parasites and antibiotic eye drops for the eye and the swelling has gone down enormously along with some liquid D3.

I have heard of a virus type disease (maybe a mixovirus?) in this species and other montane species that causes bizarre swellings like this. Sorry I do not know much about it, but it is extremely contagious, mostly fatal, and the animal will suffer. I doubt you can do much for this little guy, but there are hoe keepers on www.adcham.com who may be able to help. Go to the site www.adcham.com and look at the list of members. The forum is members only, but you can email the members who are listed in the directory as having experience with hoes. There are keepers who have had this thing sweep through their collections rapidly. Isolate him, sterilize everything, warn the seller, and be very careful with your other herps.

I think i am very lucky to say that i don't think the animal has that none the less i am keeping it in a sterile enviroment that is a full level of a house away from my collection.
Thanks for the help
