feeding mealies

khalliaar Oct 20, 2003 10:21 PM

I was thinking of feeding just mealies( some crickets for variety) to my leopard gecko, but I have heard many opinions on this and wanted a few more before I made a descision. Several people have said that feeding only mealies is good as long as they have been gut loaded, while others have said that feeding just mealies is bad and you should always have a variety, if not all crickets. I'd be thankful for some input on this.

Hi

I know of a breeder that only feeds there geckos mealworms and there geckos are just fine. But if you feed them only mealworms, make sure you keep a cap of powdered calcium in there tank at all times for them to like as needed.

As long as you maintain a dish of calcium in the tank at all times I'd go with straight mealworms. Not only do they not get out of their dish but they also don't have the risk (albeit small) of parasites that crickets can have and they can't roam around the tank and nip at your sleeping leo. I myself go with a self-sustaining mealworm colony; it's cheaper and easier on my leo than crickets.

I know fish flakes are a great gutload for crickets but what about the mealworms? will they eat it or should I try something else?

I personally go with egg-layers formula chicken feed, but rolled oats or bran also work. If you want more information on mealworms go to my "Mealworm Breeding" care guide on the site linked below.

Yes, definitely get some layer mash. I bought a 10 pound bag from a local feedstore for $2.35 total cost. It came with a piece of paper showing nutrition and ingredients. I compared it to the Fluker cricket gutload stuff, almost identical, probably 98% identical. So you can go for 12 ounces for $3.50 or 10 pounds for $2.35. Make sure you bake the mash at a low temp for 30 minutes or so to kill any bugs or eggs already working on the stuff.
