Sorry about your experience. In the future, try to use a credit card. Never pay with check or money order. The moment you do that you have given up YOUR money. A credit card (not debit), is just that, credit for a min. of 20 /- which gives you time to resolve the issue or if need be contest it with the credit company and it isn't money "out of your pocket" yet.
