POLL: What's the best part about keeping a leopard gecko?

Tim L. Oct 21, 2003 01:06 AM

Leopard geckos are colorful, and make great pets, but what's the best part about keeping them for you guys? To me, it's feeding and handling.

There are so many great things about leopard geckos. I think the one thing that sets leopards apart from other species is how comical and cute they look. A lot of people think Cresteds are so cute, but I don't. I think leopards are the absolute cutest reptile, they are just chubby little smiling cuties.

Well sit right down my wicked son
And let me tell you a story
About the boy who fell from glory
And how he was a wicked son

This ain't no holiday
But it always turns out this way
Here I am with my hand

He took his sister from his head
And then painted her on the sheets
And then rolled her up in grass and trees
And they kissed 'till they were dead

This ain't no holiday
But it always turns out this way
Here I am, with my hand

Well sit right down my evil son
And let me tell you a story
About the boy who fell from glory
And how he was a wicked son

This ain't no holiday

Come on now.......cresteds are just as cute and have just as adorable a personality as leopards hehehe. AND they can hang upsidedown!!! Yes i know, to each their own, and YES i have 7 leopard geckos compared to just one crested, BUT......i love Zeek jsut as much as my leos. He sits right up close to the glass and watches everything i do. I love the way he hangs around and will lick up his dinner while hanging there.

The thing i love about my leopard geckos is all about the look in their eyes. The way they look at you, their innocence. Each one expresses so much with the way they look at me. We don't know exactly whats going through their minds, but as always we imprint human emotions onto other creatures. My geckos might not love me, or know who or what i am, but i feel as if they do. (((Ok all but Nala, she still likes to yell at me hehehe)))

I can't say the same for Zeek (crested) His eyes are totally different than those of the leopard gecko. He, instead, shows his personality by the way he moves his head and body.

Just my view

Hi

The best part - holding them and having them climb on you, the fact that each one has it's own personality, the way they can look up at you from there tanks and have such an innocent look about them, the way they seem to look forward to seeing you and will sometimes come up to that end of the tank that you are at to see you and look at you as if saying "I'am happy to see you, pick me up and hold me so I can be near you".

Take Care, TLB

x1angelbabyx Oct 21, 2003 03:10 AM

my main reasons for wanting leos are:
1) the maximum adult size
2) handling
3) pricing

i had a debate between leos, cresties, and beardies...
-no 2 beardies b/c they get 2 big.. i only want a lizard that stays small
-no 2 cresties b/c when their tails fall off, it wont grow back..also - i THOUGHT humidity was gonna b hard

hehe joking. (I have a dry sense of humour, so shoot me.)

Everything. Handleing, Breeding, Watching.

One very nice aspect is giving geckos away to younger family members like cousins etc. Watching my 9 year old cousin handle and care for her new 3 month old gecko is great! She always supervised when handling, but she is so careful and loves her gex to bits.

my favorite part is when my gecko named Jaws bites me. i know that sounds a little weird! she is very tame, she will sit calmly in my hand. every little while she will reach and bite. could it be a gecko kiss?

i also like the way they wiggle their tail right b4 they eat. and i like they way their body moves/flows when they walk.

LeoBeginner Oct 21, 2003 07:47 AM

The way they stalke their prey, then arch their back, wiggle the tail, and pounce. It's almost feline. The look of excitement when they see that cricket is great. You can just see their mind working and plotting against it.

I love to see them wiggle their tail and pounce on their food. Makes me laugh every time. I also love how they run out of their hides when they now its dinner time.

Most, if not all, of my geckos don't wiggle their tails when they eat. They just attack the mealies. I've only seen a couple wiggle their tails once or twice, but not all the time.

*pout* i think its cute, i wish they did it more often

I only see my leos really getting into their hunting/eating if they haven't eaten in a while. My first leo to wiggle his tail wasn't fed well by his previous owner. And I've also seen my females wiggle their tail after laying their eggs since they finally got their appetite back.

and 3 eggs a' cookin'

RedQuake Oct 22, 2003 03:05 PM

Thats a good point. And i have got a pretty good routine going. They all do come out and sit by their dishes when its time. They know i'm about to feed them when i take out the mealworm container and then their individual marked containers that i count out the mealworms in. Now that they are all in one part of the room, its easier for me. Dot doesn't get to watch me feed the others before coming to her but she still sits out by the glass waiting for her turn. The exception here is Nala. She won't give me or the mealworms a second thought, but last night....or should i say this morning (2am) i heard noise so i turned on my light and there she was, out and about in her tank on her way to her dish. She looked at me then proceeded back to her hide, but at least she's coming out

I can't speak about the psycology of a gecko, but I'd say that it's probably the excitement of the hunt that does it. Do they wiggle it when they're chasing crickets around? Mine just loves the crickets. She's only a juvenile, so that might have something to do with it, but you can just see her eyes light up when she sees one run by her. She puts everything she has into hunting those little things...

I feed mealworms as a staple and avoid crickets. I don't trust the sources for them out here. I've seem a few of my geckos wiggle their tails but not very often. They do get excited though when they see the white cups i put the mealworms in to dump into their dishes....most of the time, they come out of hiding and sit in their dish

Everything, watching them eat, holding them, watching the egg(s)
hatch. Raising them since they are young. I love their color, behavior, and there appearance. I love their little personality too, and at night time alike how their eyes look when they are wide open.

kurt18 Oct 21, 2003 12:37 PM

I love watching them with a red light at night. When they are all by themselves they do the weirdest things! Did u ever wonder what your gecko is thinking?...

Tim L. Oct 21, 2003 07:18 PM

You know, this is a great question. Everyone wonders what could their dearest pets have in their minds. Could they be really recognizing you as a friend and a human, or do they not know anything but just trying survive, and to look bright, healthy, etc?

Well i know for sure that my gecko Dot is confused as can be right now. I've moved the 40 gal tank to the bottom of the new unit and she looked at me tonight like......"what the heck, your up there now...how'd that happen???"

The tank used to be up on top of my entertainment unit but being 4'91/2" tall i had to climb on a ladder to get to it. Its much easier now but its made the geckos take a second and third look at me when i've come up to the tank. Usually they only saw the top part of my face, now they can see all of me LOL. Also, i'm sure Abby is downright mad at me. Last night my dog sat infront of her tank staring at her, trying to figure out what she was. She did the same, staring back at him.....man i need film for my camera, it would have been a great shot. Neither one likes being so low......once i have their new tanks they will be up high again, just not as high hehehe

Honestly i don't know what any of them are thinking, but Dot does have a mischievious side so theres no telling what she might be up to hehehe. I can't wait to get the new tanks for her and Abby........they will love the room and that they will be up higher on the unit so they can see everything
