I am in need of ......

Bezzerra Oct 21, 2003 09:47 AM

care sheets pertaining to anacondas. I'm at work right now and have spent too much time trying to search for a care sheet through the forums and through search engines.

My husband works at a pet shop where they had a 2 1/2 foot green anaconda displayed. My husband told the manager not to buy it but couldn't stop him. The snake has been in the store for over a month a half and has not eaten at all. He feels all mushy now. They don't sell any books and no one knows how to really care for it. Grrr.. don't get me started on how mad this makes me.....

Anyway, the manager finally admitted defeat and gave the snake to my husband so we could take it home and care for it. Now, we need to know it's requirements. Please help me by providing links to care sheets or giving me advice on how I can help this snake recover. Thank you!

They have a good one.

New England Reptile Distributors.

Be patient too. Chances are the animal has been through a lot.

I currently care for a red tailed boa, a green-phase burmese python and a ball python but I've never dealt with an anaconda before. He has been soaking in his water a lot and I wasn't sure if this was normal. He has bumps (not from parasites)on his belly. Do you have any suggestions about what this could be from?

Anaconda care is not too much different than most boids. In fact I think Anacondas are quite charming.

The bumps could be anything (that perhaps a vet should see). Having said that when mine had bumps that sound similar it was a bacterial skin infection that he shed off and now is fine. There is a post below somewhere discussing it. My vet suggested just watching him and making sure it was gone when he shed. And it was.

DFR can give you lots of solid advice too. He suggested I use vinegar to change the ph to slightly acidic. (Must use a ph test kit) That helped. My vet also gave me some Nolvasan to dilute & spray him with daily. Rinse, dry, and repeat 24hrs later. I did that with no ill effects but be warned Nolvasan can be dangerous if not used properly. (Again with the vet supervision).

Best of luck with your new little one. Keep us posted.

The bumps you refer to are not uncommon in young greens that are allowed to soak for extended periods of time. You should remove the water container and replace it with one that is too small for the animal to submerge in, or the condition could become much worse. Keep the substrate as dry as possible, and the temp in the mid-80's. As long as they don't become infected they will disappear after a few sheds.
