P. aurotanea raised itself in my vivarium

Danconnor Oct 21, 2003 10:00 AM

I used a lot of meadow sweepings to feed over the summer, and I guess produced enough little food items to raise this guy. The tank is 5 feet long and very heavily planted.

There are more tads in the water (pond in tank) but it is so full of plant roots and the water is so stained I don't think I can get them out. If I see an adult with tads on its back, is it acceptable to try to remove them manually?

When you discover a male with tads on his back, remove the male from the tank and place him in a container with water, he will release the tads when he is ready.

Afterwards, replace the male in the tank.

What is a meadow sweeping?

Hi Jim!

I have a heavy canvas butterfly net, from a biological supply house. I flog the weeds with it and dump the contents into a tupperware which I open and set into the terrarium.

You can't dump it in because too many weed seeds. You also have to pick out grasshoppers as they will eat bromeliads, and big spiders too.

Once this summer I swept an unmowed part of my lawn. Every cricket must have laid eggs, because my net was full of pinhead crix. I netted a ton of em!

Great idea - thanks for the tip! I'll have to get me one of those nets.
