Genetic Stripes

bobclark Oct 21, 2003 11:34 AM

Here's a picture of a baby genetic striped ball. In 1989 I acquired the original striped animal, a wild male captured in Ghana. The snake didn't breed for several years but eventually produced some hets that I was able to raise and breed. In 1999 I hatched the first striped babies. The old male died last year and this year's babies were produced from breeding two hets. They're great animals with lots of potential.

Thanks for sharing and bringing that awesome gene to the hobby!

Here is a yearling picture of a pair of great grandchildren of the original striped male that have a classic jungle look to them (not sure why and they have more yellow than this pic shows).

Even if it turns out that the striped gene has been lost in the three successive generations of out breeding it's still fun to try to follow the lines through the generations and know that they have a famous ancestor. Sorry to hear he passed but he has defiantly left his mark!

AWESOME BOB!!!!!! Sorry to hear about the original Stripe male. He definatley did a good job in getting the gene out. I as fortunate enough to have 5 this year from your original bloodline. I got hets through the Barkers, and it is BY far my favorite ball to work with. ALl the stripes that are produced VARY greatly. IT looks like you got 2 perfect ones, and the one that Morph King Got was more broken up like some of the ones you see. The gene is VERY cool in how varrying it is. It seems like different bloodlines of outcrossed stripe line even produce different Stripes. We'll see how it works even more in the future. This year I produced one almost patternless. AWESOME WORK, and CONGRATS!!!!!!! They look GREAT. Jeremy Stone

In addition to the different outbred lines from Bob's original male I understand that there is also at least one separate line from the stripes that the Snake Keeper imported. I'm sure they will all prove compatible and of course they could well be closely related in Africa (or not) for all we know but it will be interesting to see the first stripe from different founder lines. I know someone local to me who has an SK het so I hope to eventually work out some sort of a loan with them even though I'm not even sure if I have the Clark gene in my 25% het female offspring.

The nice thing about such a valuable morph is that it encourages lots of initial out breeding which should have this morph off to a very good start.
