Playsand revisited

dblough Oct 21, 2003 06:21 PM

I called my local Home Depot and they don't carry either of the Kiddies Fun washed playsand or the Tropical playsand, they said all they have is the All Purpose playsand which is that real pebbly junk. I am curious could I use regular beach sand? There is a place here in town that sells Beach sand and I was thinking if I could get that and say put it in the oven on a cookie sheet and bake it at 400 degrees for a half hour or so to kill any bacteria would that work? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It would kill the bacteria but you will most likely have another problem. I tried doing the same thing seeing as I live by the beach and noticed that my lizards wanted to eat the sand because it was salty. Better to just find another place that sells it.

I wonder if in addition to baking it in a oven if it was boiled it water would it remove the saltiness fron the sand?

Possibly...but that sounds like WAY too much work. I'd just try and find it somewhere else or go with a different substrate (tried wheat bran?)

Why not just sift the sand from home depot? Or use another type of substrate such as a type of paper? chris

Oh I've sifted it numerous times, I'm just looking for that real fine type sand. Even after sifting the all purpose quick crete sand its still nothing more than tiny pebble like rocks. I know it probably sounds weird but I'm just looking for a finer type sand, kinda like in this picture from Dachiu. I actually called them and asked what type of sand it was and where they got it, they said its just fine childrens playsand purchased from Ace Hardware. My local ace hardware just has the All Purpose type sand just like Home Depot. Thank you for the reply.

ZooMed makes a product called Reptisand. Its not a calci-sand, its made of quartz, and its very fine grain sand, looks like the pic u posted. Thats what I use, and I've got no complaints!

Try Toys R Us....they have a fine playsand that is washed. I have a couple of friends that use it for their dragons.
