Flagellates and Flagyl prescription should I bother?

Rollin May 28, 2003 10:00 PM

We decided to take a stool sample into the vet since they both had particularly loose stools today. The vet found Flagellates she said they where common but since the stools were runny she gave us (the tegus each weigh 5 pounds) 4 pills of 250mg Flagyl (metronidazole) to be taken one now and one again in 2 weeks. She said it might help them gain appetite. I already gave one pill to my girl tegu with some turkey. I'm contemplating even giving it to my male tegu because he already has a good appetite. I had a stressful experience with panacure once: my bearded dragon stopped eating all together for a few days after we gave it to him. How dangerous are these flagellates? Is it worth it to give him the Flagyl? I guess if it made my tegus come out more often it would be worth it for me but I really can't expect more growth out of my male, he has went from 35" to 40" in the last 3 weeks. Should I wait till he's done growing first? He comes out for a couple hours a day, eats about 6-8 mice, has a runny stool a couple times a week, and has not came out all day 2 times in the last month. I was also thinking of trying parazap.com

Are they two Tegus in the same cage? if they are treat both of them. Because if they both have it and you only treat the female there is a chance that the male will reinfect you female.

I just gave my male his pill too. My female seems to be fine with it, she has been eating and acting normal.
