New owner of a bp

dryad001 Oct 21, 2003 07:37 PM

Well I am new to this board so hello to all. But one quick question. My substrate I am using is astroturf and seems to work well but its more of a cover for the snake than anything. I'm sure the move to her new home caused some stress, but she wont go in here box, she will spend most of her time under the turf, is that odd??? Or is that some way to comfort herself? Yes she is curled up into a little cute ball.

How many hides does she have? I've heard (as is also the case with my little one) that they prefer hides that aren't too big for them if they were to ball up. At first mine didn't use them either. So I put 2 hides on each side of the tank (with slight variations in size) for my BP to choose from and then it started using them. Now it has a favorite on the warm side and a favorite on the cool side. I use Lizard Liner which is a kind of felt green carpet like substrate. My BP can't get under it because of all the hides and stuff holding it down!!

Are your temps in line?

Ball Pythons, and snakes in general, like small areas to hide in. They are more comfortable hiding in a box in which they barely fit, than a box that you could fit two or three of them in. Going under the astroturf gives them that enclosed feeling, because it conforms around their body. You can try putting two or more hides in the enclosure, just make sure they are small enough. How big is your ball python, and how big is the new home. A large enclosure can stress out a small snake.
