My Snake-Dented Eye

CaliTitansFan03 Oct 21, 2003 09:36 PM

I don't know if this has been asked before, but my ball's left eye has a dent in it. I heard that this might be dehydration, but it always has fresh water. Any clue as to what this is? Thanks.

snakes hardly drink water. they get it thru the air....raise humidity 50-65% and it should go away soon

My bci will drink continuously for minutes...they drink. Actually, I don't think snakes absorb much of anything though their skin (relatively - not like frogs) Ambient humidity is still important, though.

Per our experience, ball pythons do, in fact, drink water and do not "get it thru the air." The dent in your snake's eye is most likely due to the lack of humidity. Our female ball had the same problem. Her eyes were very wrinkled for a couple months, until I read about this very common problem, on several snake sites. To correct this problem, you need to increase the humidity in the tank. And once we did that, her eyes were back to normal after her next shed.

Now, you are probably asking, How did we increase the humidity? First, if you have a screen top lid, try covering most of the lid with either wax paper (what I use) or plexiglass. This holds more of the humidity in the tank rather than it escaping through the screen lid. Also, place another water container with a sponge or moss, in the tank, over the heat pad. I use both of these techniques and never had a problem since.

Hope this helps.

My BPs drink a large amount of water. I have some water bowls that are emptied within a few days.
