OK, I want to know where you find the time for all those animals and how come I never have any spare time, lol. Of course, my husband would probably pass out if I even hinted I wanted to acquire that many more herps, let alone birds.

Seriously, where did you get your westerns, and how does their care compare to easterns? I've heard they're more delicate. Also, I'm guessing you're in Southern CA. How do you manage to hibernate all those torts? Inquiring minds (mine) want to know!

I must admit that the animals take up a larger amount of my time than is probably socially healthy. I'm the weird animal freak down the street. "There he is folks, the nut who has the zoo in his backyard! He's like Michael Jackson!" You should have seen my list of animals before I got rid of a LOT or birds. I used to raise lots of exotic finches, but it just got to be too much work. I am even considering selling off some of my lizards so I will have more free time.

Yes, I do live in Southern California. Huntington Beach, to be exact. The weather is great for some tortoises, but a bit too humid for the Greeks, of which I have quite a few. They get the sniffles a lot. Anyway, I got the Westerns from a guy in Irvine, CA., who claims to have got them from the famous tortoise guy who runs Casa Tortuga in nearby Fountain Valley. (I can't remember his name at the moment.) The Western Hermann's, as far as I have seen, is just as hardy as the Eastern, but they seem a bit less active and are not as friendly. My Easterns are as tame as can be and follow me around the yard like puppies.

I hibernate all the tortoises in a large refrigeration unit that I bought from a restaraunt. It works wonderfully. I just box them up with newspaper under them which I occasionally moisten for humidity during the hibernation. I just open the door to the fridge every day to give them air. If I am going to be away, I have an aquarium pump I run a hose from into the fridge for air. I was already getting it ready a few weeks ago, but it has suddenly decided to be summer here for a while longer, I guess. It was near 90 degrees here today.

Cool... so I can look forward to meeting you at the November 21st meeting of the CTTC in Long Beach. I'm giving a presentation on obtaining your first tortoise... you know... do's and don'ts and that sort of thing.
Walter Allen put together the Casa de Tortuga got knows how long ago. It tore my heart out to see him close the doors and get rid of most the stuff. I believe he had a Galap that actually did belong to Michael Jackson at one time.

I didn't want to bother listing all of the Greek subspecies I have, so I just said "regular Greeks" as opposed to golden Greeks.

I guess you never read the Asian turtle board. I talked about my keeled box turtle, which is an Asian species of box turtle with a heavily saw-toothed shell and a high ridge down the middle of it's back. I found out on the internet that it is an endangered species now and I got from a friend who found it wandering around the backyard of a new house he bought. His neighbors told him it had been living back there for at least 3 years without anyone caring for it at all. It never got so much as a drink from a hose. How it lived is beyond me.

Fun!

I have 5 dogs (yes I am crazy, plus lot's of shelter work!)
Tourmaline * Bela * Iris * Rocco * Sadie

1 Sulcata (Hamlet)

and soon to have 1 Kestrel Falcon (just got my falconry license.)

I'd love to have more but one sulcata can take up a lot of time and space!!

wow falcontry license huh? what is involved in that? how long does it take? Sorry tort people if this is off topic.

Nikki22 Oct 22, 2003 08:58 PM

you have to pass a test, get a sponsor for your two year apprenticeship, and have your facilities approved. Then you can send off for your State and Federal licenses.

lots of work!
