Cricket care, are we passing bacteria to the dragons?

CheriS Oct 21, 2003 11:42 PM

After talking to several people the past week and hearing of some test performed on crickets that harbored bacteria(very dangerous to bearded dragons), I am convinced that the husbandry and feeding of crickets is as important as the husbandry of the dragons.

This includes some substrates that have been recommended and used by others on here and also the feeding routines..... Example, do you know that corn mash and meal if it gets damp, actually creates a mold that is toxic to bearded dragons when consumed by the crickets then eaten by the dragons? OR that veggies a day old especially under warm lights carry a bacteria that is not dangerous until the veggie start to break down? Those recycles veggies from the dragons may not be a good idea!

Scary huh... we have clear crickets, we have little if any die off and not had any medical problems related to bacteria or parasites in a few years, below is a link to a guide for cricket care that I wrote, if nothing else it has good pictures

Please read it as I think there are some things that others do as routine and not realize the possible harm you could be placing your dragons in.
