Leopard gecko's skin

Tim L. Oct 22, 2003 12:03 AM

From what I read in books, I noticed few sentences that mention geckos of all kinds have skins being very delicate. In REPTILES magazine issue few years ago, there was an article about day gecko's skin being torn easily if they're handled a little while. Is this true for leos? I'm definitely not planning to squeeze or grab them hard while handling, but all I'm planning to do is just let them climb up to my arm or hand, and gently pet them across their back. So, is it true that leo's skins can tear easily? Or had anyone faced this experience?

Hi

There are certain species in the gecko family that do have very delicate skin and can rip easily, can't think of the name right know, but leopard geckos skin isn't delicate like those are. A name of one just came to me, don't quote me on this, but I believe one is the "velvet gecko".

I know from experience, because I love and pet mine up a storm everyday.

Take Care, TLB

A golden gecko is one that has thin delicate skin which can tear very easily. They're fine though with normal handling and light petting, just have to be careful with your nails and such. Leo's have a bit of a thicker bumpier skin in comparison, but I handle my leo's the same way as my goldens, sometimes for hours if they are in the mood. They all like their shoulder rides, plus head, neck, and belly rubs, and nobody ever got torn up from it yet
