CO2 euthanasia

stoopid Oct 22, 2003 12:04 AM

i couldnt get any frozen mice today so i picked up some live ones. whenever i feed live i usually just smack them in the head with something and toss em in the feeding tub, but i have some co2 cartidges for pellet guns and paintball guns. could i just puncture the cartridge and spray it all in a box of mice rather than the above method?

I don't think that would be a very good idea. Have you ever punctured on of these things before? Not only would it take off like a rocket, it gets very cold. I mean cold enough to cause tissue damage. Also you would need a method of sealing off the container with the pinky. They are amazing at staying alive with only very litte o2. If you do not seal the container there will be mixing of the gas for a long time and the pinky just will not die. I think just wacking them on the head would be your best option barbaric as it is. jmho

You can build a chamber for doing this with the refillable CO2 bottles (like you use for paintball guns), but you need to know what you are doing. Any pressurized gas can be hazardous to deal with. The method you are describing sounds to me like a good way to end up in the emergency room.
