Is fluctuation in humidity bad for my BP???

Luckiefool420 Oct 22, 2003 12:09 AM

I have my tank hooked up to an ultrasonic humidifier. It turns on every three hour between 9am and midnight and at 3am during the night. My problem is during the day the humidity will usually drop down into the 40's about a half hour before it gets fogged again. And when it fogs is usaaly gets between 85%-95%. Can that wide range of humidity cause any problems or should it be fine. And I have about 3/4 of the top covered in plexi glass to try to keep humidity in. Also when he is not in a shed cycle is that much humidity bad? thanks for your help

I'm not sure about your method of making humidity. I don't think fluctuations are an issue. I do have concerns about the 95% humidity part. These are not Chondros and do not require a massive or prolonged amount of humidity. This can actually contribute to RI and mold and mildew growth. Is your enclosure becoming wet?

Is humidity really only an issue during shed or should it be at a certain level at all times?

I believe you should always provide adequate humidity. That being said, what is adequate humidity. You'd have to check out the average humidity where these guys are from. Does it fluctuate? Yes. I live in central Florida and do not have to provide any extra humidity outside of the shed cycle. I do not keep enclosures wet as this would result in other problems. If your snake does not shed properly, you may need to look into the current humidity level. Using light bulbs and heat lamps with an open cage is extremely difficult to maintain any humidity level.

It getting all the way up to 95% is a rare occurance. Most of the time it usually peaks at 85 or 90 but it drops relitively fast from that high. I would say my average hunidity is 60% but the humidity is always creeping down untill the next fogging. the only time my cage looks wet is when I mist it. I have to have a heat lamp to keep the temps up, so that dries it up pretty quick. I do live in Utah where it is pretty dry to begin with.
