Is this normal?

trevoro Oct 22, 2003 03:58 PM

Just got my beardie one of those half log hideouts. Before he used to have a little homemade hide area with rocks that he never used. Now that I got the log he seems to like it, even sleeps in it every night instead of behind rocks against the glass.

Is it normal for them to spend time in there during the day? He'll spend a couple hours in there at a time. I'm used to see him basking all day. He is shedding right now so this might be part of it as well.

Some of my adults do hide during the day. About how old is your dragon? Reason I ask that is of course if it's above 1 year old it may be looking to brumate. Also what kinds of lighting are you using? Higher powered lights like mvb? I use Powersuns in all my cages but in my males 3x2x2 cages I have to create a shaded part for them if they want to get out of the light totally like a cave to cool down more then the cool side would allow. The cool side in my tank in the light is 85 degrees, but in the shaded spot I made it goes down to 75 where they choose to go for a while during the day to cool off. They bask most of the time when they are awake. There both in a semi brumation state now so they are hiding most of the time, but even normally in the summer they will go to the hide I would say 2 hours out of the 14 hour light period just too rest and cool, and get out of the light.

mine is about 3-4 months old
temps are 105-110 in basking spot, around 85 on cool side and 80 inside the log. i'm using a t-rex mvb bulb for the basking side and a 100W heat bulb on the other side to keep it from getting too cool.

That's probably why he's hiding a bit each day. That's a lot of light shinning down on him. I doubt beardies in the wild are under light constantly all day basking from sun up too sun down. I'm sure there are times they go into rock hides, or shrubbery to escape some of the light. I would just keep an eye on him, make sure he eats like normal, and is not preoccupied with his new hide. If he retreats there to cool them goes back to bask, he might have found a nice easy spot to cool off under. Just make sure he isn't sleeping during the day. If it's just to cool and get out of the sun I think it's normal behavior.
