I use 28 qt’s for my large adults. 32 qt’s would be fine. Just use your best judgement.

what is it as far as weight and length?

Do you think that the 16qt is too small for young just-breedable size?

Thanks

My large adults are around 24", about 4 years old, not sure about their weight. But I think that if you had a really large animal, over 30", that you might want to use a 32qt. I think that a 16qt. would be a good size for young adults. I go by the snake’s length. When the snake is long enough to span about 1 and 1/2 times it's length on the longest side of the Rubbermaid container it is about time to move it to a larger size. But I like to give my snakes some extra room sometimes. It's hard to say without seeing the snake and the cage next to each other. Like I said before, you have to use your best judgement. You should have enough room for the snake to roam yet not give too much room or the snake could have troubles trying to locate it's food. Anyway, that is just my opinion. I'm definitely not an expert. Hope I helped.

for reference is everyone in agreement that any adult hognose snake should be comfortable in a 10 gal terrarium, or do some people put them in bigger enclosures.

I'd like to hear some opinions on this matter.

Thanks

I don't think that every adult western would be comfortable in a 10 gal. aquarium. I'm getting a 30" western soon and am going to put her in a 28qt. Rubbermaid. If you used a 10gal. aquarium, after you add a water dish big enough for it to soak in and a hiding place there isn't much room for it to roam. Could you imagine a 30" snake cramped in a 10gal? Especially thick animals like a hognose. Just my opinion.

I agree. Even some of my larger easterns that I have kept made full use of their space. I kept 3 adult easterns in a 75 gallon. They loved it...made full use of ALL (and I mean all) of the space. Andy
