New species of fruit flies

coyotethug Oct 22, 2003 05:05 PM

I saw something a while back about a new species of fruit flies available for culture. Anyone have any experience with them or a source that I can get them from? Thanks for the help.

I think you may be talking about Drosophila buzzatti. They are intermediate sized between melanogaster and hydei, yet have the 15 day life cycle of melanogaster. Thus they have the benefit of quickly producing as well as being larger and more filling for your darts.

I'm not sure if they are wingless like melanogaster or if they have flightless wings like hydei, perhaps someone who has used them knows. It would be nice if they were wingless, because wings are just useless chitin anyway

I plan to order them within a month or so just to find out.

www.flyculture.com is the only ones I've seen who has them.
