Quaestion about history of Beardies in U.S.

Wain Oct 22, 2003 05:22 PM

I was just wondering if anyone knew roughly when Bearded Dragons were introduced to the U.S. Also curious if anyone knows who some of the first breeders were/are? I know Beardies are relatively new pets in the States (compared to most everything else anyway), and was just curious how long this has been going on here.

According to Vosjoli/Mailloux

During the first half of the 80's, BD's were imported in to the U.S. from Germany.
Vosjoli/Mailloux got their fist BD in 1984 but others were being illegally smuggled in.
So, it's hard telling who the first was.

An exerpt from the book, "The Bearded Dragon" by Steve Grenard states:

"According to Roy Hoser, the author of two books detailing the illegal export of Australian animals, most bearded dragons were smuggled out of the country between 1974 and 1990."

The book further explains that alot of confiscated stock was giving to breeders to care for legally instead of being destroyed. Most of the captive bred bearded dragons outside of Australia were from those breeders. Some may also be descendants of smuggled animals but all are captive bred since Australia was able to elminate for the most part, illegal smuggling. This was also helped out but people refusing to buy wild caught and thus, smuggled, bearded dragons.
