Trouble with a sub-adult Beardie named Strider- need serious help!

I have a dragon that's almost two years old and is acting rather lethargic. He's done this before, last year and it was about this time then as well.

I don't use the calci-sand, I do use a heat rock and have live plants and other things in his cage. Unfortunately the cage is about four and a half ft tall and was used years ago for birds by my dad. Of course I cleaned everything throughly and used a different kind of wire. (He had chicken wire, which I promptly scrapped.) And I live in MO where the weather can be quite tricky, which I suppose is part of the problem.

I've never seen him drink since I placed the cactuses in his cage- he attacks them rather vigorously.

However I was worried about him because he was solid to the touch in the stomach and seemed to be either cold or hot- never his normal temperatures. I gave him a rather long bath and cleaned some of the loose dirt and pollen from his scales and cleaned some blood off his scales from the worms that he devours.

This afternoon he did his business which I promptly cleaned and he felt less solid but no less lethargic. I took him outside on the lawn and kept a close eye on him because we have two dogs, one of which might harass him.

In about a half hour of basking, he opened his eyes for the longest I've seen for a couple of days and actually became more active for about ten to fifteen minutes- I also tried to feed him which didn't work either.

Taking him inside he basked until I gave him a vitamin/electrolyte appetite stimulant- he drank about half of a 5 cc syringe. The left over stuff was then placed in his cage for later use.

When I left he seemed to be slightly more active but is there anything more I can do to get him to eat? He refuses to eat his veggies, opting for the cactus; and forget about the pellet food. I've tried everything to get him to try it, but if it don't move- he ain't interested...

It sounds to me like he would like to brumate.
and...hot rocks aren't recommended for beardies. Beardies do not feel heat on their bellies like they do from above. Reptiles have been severely burned because they can't feel the damage being done.

May be an ideal to remove the cactus so he goes back to eating his regular food. Prickly bear cactus (I think) is edible for dragons so there shouldn't be a worry there. However, he obviously likes it more than anything else. He may also be eating it cause he craves moisture. Maybe leave a small dish of water in his cage constantly for him to drink from till he is back on his regular salads.

You mentioned living plants..are they in individual pots or is the bottom of the cage all soil? This soil can cause impaction as much as cali sand. Has he been pooing regularly? Try regular soaks in warm water couple times a day to see if he picks up more. ALso, use digital thermometers with probes to get temperatures of his basking area and ambiant temperatures. FOr a dragon his age, his basking spot should be 95-100F with a cool side around 80F. If it is cooler than this, it could be triggering him to enter burmation.

I regret to inform everyone visiting this that Strider has passed away. I had placed him outside while we were working in the yard, but after an hour he still hadn't moved and when we tried to touch him or give him liquids he opened his mouth and hissed- his eyes never opened though.

Bringing him inside I put him back in his cage and on his heat source- but by then it was to late. His body flattened out and I could feel in between his ribs.

I hate to tell everyone this because I loved him as if he were human and I definitely won't be sleeping well until I find out the culprit and if it can spread to my Mountain horned Dragon which will be getting Strider's old cage.

I'm real sorry. Beardies are real good at hiding how sick they are until they are very sick.
