Fruit fly culturing

iamonlyatree Oct 22, 2003 10:28 PM

Hello,
This is my first time culturing fruit flys. I got the needed materials from eds fly meat and set up two cultures. They ended up with yellow and red colored mold whithin a week. I then started two new batches (1 of each species of fly), and i already see yellow mold in one of them. The culturing stuff is supposed to have mold inhibitors in them?!? im using clean materials Well im running out of flys in the cultures i bought with my frogs. Im following the directions on the package. Should i let the culture continue with the mold? How many flies is a good number to start a new culture? and how long from start will they start producing? Thanks - imaonlyatree

The yellow and red molds are not as "bad" as the black kind. It should be fine to use, but start new cultures as soon as they start producing. I would start with as many flies as you can spare. I sometimes start with 100-200, but 50 would be a good number. The more you start with, the faster and larger the culture will produce. Remember to start new cultures around 5-7 days and kill cultures when they stop producing (4-6 weeks). Keep new cultures away from old ones to minimize mold spore contamination.
