I have just had published a paper on the distribution of African monitor lizards, w/maps and listings of their respective localities, = 3,268 of them for starters in the Journal of Biogeography. If your interested in getting a reprint, post your email addresses and I will contact you directly. Its not free, but for serious keepers, it gives you an idea of where and how much of Africa they live upon. The paper covers savannah, niles, ornates, white throats & (former) subspecies, yemens, desert monitors, and the 1 fossil monitor from Kenya.
cheers,
