Female grandis ate her egg, why???

rml1973 Oct 23, 2003 06:20 AM

Hi all.

Yesterday I saw my female grandis running around the cage with one of her (apparently) newlaid eggs in her mouth. Before I could do anything, she had cracked it, and ate the contents.

I don't thing she's done it before, as I have a lot of hatchlings from this summer running around in their little cages But offcourse - there has been a LONG time since I've gotten eggs from her. Just thought she might have stopped for this year.

She's a couple of years old now - some friends bought her at the fair in Hamm in 2002. From Dr.Ingo. Possibly the same Ingo that's on this forum?

Anyway - can anyone enlighten me? I wanna understand why this happened.

Hi,

thats indeed very likely one of my grandis offspring. I sell a dozen or so each spring on the Hamm fair.

Its very normal for grandis to eat infertile eggs.
This time of year, mosr females have already stopped laying eggs.
But its pretty common, that some produce a last infertle clutch, which mostly is eaten again before the shell hardens.
