Meet 'Echo'

LeoBeginner Oct 23, 2003 07:01 AM

Sorry about that last post. Still tryin to figure out how to post a few pics in one message.

Anyway, this is Echo. She's only 2 months old and is just settling into her new home (she was the one who woke me up on her first night with a raptor-like call).

Her parents were a High-Yellow/Patternless and a Normal. She was the most active and nicest looking little leo at the show I was at. She was walking around and trying to explore, while most were just sleeping in their little tubs.

I love the bright yellow circle on her back. The pic doesn't do her justice. She's such a bright yellow...I can't wait to see what she looks like when she grows up.

Anyway, here's a pic of her hunting for crickets. I'll throw another one up too. Sorry about the bluriness, I'm working on that.

Here she is just after she got a cricket. She swallowed it too quickly for me to get an action shot, but she looks pretty satisfied by her dinner.

. . . nice looking leopard gecko. You also have a pretty cool set up.

She will really grow fast in the next couple months. Pay attention to the changes - because they really happen fast and are really neat.

Have fun!!! Thanks for sharing the pix.

Well, I have no idea what 'het' means (you'll have to forgive me, I'm VERY new to this), but one of her parents was a High-Yellow/Patternless mix, the other was a Normal. This is probably a good time to ask what 'het' means.

I can't wait to see what that makes her. The abberent pattern on her back was the deal clincher when I saw her at the show. I also really liked the look of her head. It's a really nice brown colour with a horizontal white band around the lower part. (compared with the all black heads of her siblings and cousins) I wonder how having a brown and white head versus an all black head at this age will affect her adult colouring....anyone able to answer that, or is there too much randomness in hypothesizing?

Her tail is also incredibly bright. The white bands are the brightest I've ever come across.

I just read a post from a while back about using black t-shirts as backdrop to get good pics, might try that tonight if she's up for it! (with a better camera of course)

If one parent was the result of a high yellow x patternless cross, that would make her a 50% possible het for patternless. In reality, she either got the recessive patternless gene or she didn't, but the only was to know if she has it is to mate her with a patternless, if you get patternless babies you'll know she carries the gene. It is a recessive trait so will have no affect on her appearance, and is irrelevant unless you plan to breed her, in which case it may or may not be relevant.

That is assuming that by patternless you actually mean patternless, and not hypo. If she has hypo genes that may manifest in her appearance, as that is a selectively bred trait.

The light brown head does not sound like anything unusual. Generally the black bands will fade into a purple or brown as the gecko gets a little bigger, which is gradually replaced by a combination of yellow background and black spots.

I don't have any plans to breed her (at the present time), so I guess the world will never know what genes she's carrying....

I love them at that age, it is so much fun to watch them grow. Good luck with her!

Thanks
