getting two new uros

Twiglet Oct 23, 2003 08:22 AM

Hi , I'm getting two female Uromastyx geyri tomorrow
Very excited gonna call them "Bam Bam & Pebbles"
They are 7 months old and been together since babies

Few questions I want to ask :

What substrate does everyone use ?
What about bird seed , what type ? and how often ?

One of the books I've got says they can have sunflower hearts & lentils ? how often
should I give them ??

( never had uros before , I have 1 bearded dragon 'Twiglet' )

Hi,
I keep my Mali Uromastyx on parakeet seed, which is pretty much just the millet seed. Seed is a good substrate because it is dust free, digestible by the uro, dries out the poop, feels like sand, and then you dont have to provide the seed in the food bowl since the uro can eat it whenever he/she wants. I'm not sure about the sunflower hearts or lentils; I feed mine a mix of greens (tat soi, lollo rosso, arugula, etc.) dandelion greens/flowers, clover greens/flowers, mixed veggies, chopped de-spined cactus and the occasional Rep-Cal Adult Bearded Dragon Pellets. Good luck with your new uros!

How is it to raise millipedes?

dragonmlv Oct 23, 2003 05:49 PM

Raising millipedes is great. They are quiet, odorless, easy to care for and friendly (not to mention cute!). Plus, they aren't super expensive, and they come in a ton of different colors and sizes, from red to black to pink to green, from 3" to 12". If you, or anyone here, has any questions about millipedes feel free to email me (dragonmlv@yahoo.com) I've been keeping millipedes for 6 years now, so I can answer almost any questions

id love to see your photos! How do you decide to raise them?

When I was about 12 I got my first millipede as a pet, she was a Giant African Black about 11". A few years after she died I got another one, and then another after that one, and then one day I found Fire millipedes in a pet store so I got some of those. Since then I have been keeping many different types, and hoping that they will breed! Here's a pic of my oldest Madagascan Fire Millipede, Cassie - eating her favorite meal, cucumber. I'll take some more pics of my other millis soon and post them in my gallery. If you want some basic info/pics go to:

It's a useful site. Not mine, I'll be starting Millipets.com soon, hopefully. Thanks for your interest in millipedes!

colors! In my house in Brazil there are a lot of them in my garden but they are always green.A beautiful vivid green. Some of them have hair too and those can burn you. There is a tree in my garden that has colonies of millepedes living up it.I dont know why they like that specific tree!

I use white millet for substrate, which I get in 25lb bags from a garden store (they carry bulk bird seeds, too).

Lentils and sunflower hearts are both great (no sunflower seeds in the shell, though!!). I feed a dry mix that includes ground dry beans and lentils and bee pollen. This is in a bowl in the cage at all times.

Hope that helps!

Where do you get bee pollen from? Is this a liquid, powder, etc. I'm not familiar with it.

Sunfox Oct 23, 2003 08:31 PM

they usually have bee pollen granules available. They look like little pebbles but are still pretty soft.

Great thanks! Do you do anything to them or serve as is? Do you serve daily?

el_toro Oct 24, 2003 12:08 AM

I just sprinkle it on top. I don't generally use it every day - maybe once a week as a treat. It can get messy since it's so soft. I believe some people do use it every day - it's just a choice!
