More Feeding Questions...

Gary42 Oct 23, 2003 09:09 AM

I have a male/female pair of '02 Balls. Up until now, no problems with feeding - they have eaten fresh and f/t like pigs. The male went off feed about a month ago and the female hasn't stopped yet. With everything else being controlled (heat, etc) how long should I wait to try to feed the male once he has stopped? All winter? Or should I offer food every 2 weeks or so? I know Balls typically go off feed for several months, but I am curious about anything you can use to predict/help them get back when they are ready.

Thanks!

With my adult males, once they stop for the winter, I do not attempt to feed until March-April. Or until they look very active. If they are all over their cage, I may offer a smaller meal. For the most part, they fast 6 months of the year. All of my females so far fast through the winter. My younger breeding males will most likely fast but I will offer food once a month at the same time I offer my breeding females.

I do not "cool" my hatchlings. They are fed year-round and go off-feed when they choose. I have found that upto 12 months or so, they will eat very well and consistent.
