Technical Help hehehe

RedQuake Oct 23, 2003 09:26 AM

Ok, so from reading the picture messages below i'm assuming that if all of my pics are uploaded to Kingsnake i can then post multiple pics in a post right?

Also, i'm very jealous of all of you with digital cameras LOL, and i want one very very badly. I love my Minolta camera and the shots i can get are great, BUT i'm not in a position to keep developing film.......so....... Is there a half decent digital camera that i can use with my Compaq Deskpro Pentium 2 192.0 MB RAM??? ((( i was looking under SYSTEM for that info))). It says that the File System and Virtual Memory is 32-bit if that helps at all. As you can see i'm a bit computer illiterate

I'm going out to do some window shopping today, including price new computers and cameras, but seeing as alot of yoiu use them i wanted your input

Thanks a million

i think any dig camera would work for almost any computer..most come with a attachment to plug your card in to so you can get all your pictures in to your computer fast and easy.

Right now 5 pixel dig cameras are pretty much the best (a few are higher) but they run around 500 bucks. As a rule it is 100 bucks per pixel. so.... 1.5 pixel = 150 bucks, 2.5 pixel = 250 bucks. check e bay for a good cheap used dig camera.

I own a 1.5 pixel camera right now and it sucks for close up detail shots, so i would sugest you get a 2.5 or higher...my cousin has a 5.2 or something like that and the shots are amazing...i am gona steal it one of these days so i can take pics of all my leo's.

hope that helps a bit

5 megapixels is geared more towards professional photographers. If you just want a decent camera for recreational purposes, something in the 2 megapixel range will suffice.

Mine is 2.3, if that helps. I bought it two years ago for $180. It is an awesome camera, but it doesn't really show in my pictures because of my crappy indoor lighting. When I go outside to take pictures though, my camera never lets me down.

Hey RedQuake,

You will want to make sure that your P2 has USB ports. It should, but just confirm it - that is how the camera will hook up to your computer.

If your looking for the quick and dirty to post photos online, go for a 2 to 3 megapixel camera, and also pick up a card reader, this hooks up to the computer via USB and acts much like a floppy drive for media card in the camera.

You can definitely research this stuff online - there are guides to choosing a digital. But man, a P2? Do you know how old that computer is in dog years?

LeoBeginner Oct 23, 2003 11:43 AM

Good call on checking for USB ports. That would have really sucked if he'd dropped $300 and couldn't use it...

Incase you're truly computer illiterate, a USB port is a small rectangular port. It doesn't have a bunch of pins in it like most ports do (your monitor/printer/serial/mouse/etc. ports will all have a series of little pins sticking out of them, or a series of holes where something with pins can stick in)

BUT, even if you have USB ports in a P2, if you're running Windows 95, you probably can't use the USB ports. I don't think 95 supports it. Windows 98 likely does (I might be talking out of my A$$ here, but I think 98 does).

If you start thinking about upgrading your computer as well, be sure to look for a used system. You can get a P3 886Mhz, w/ tonnes of RAM, a 40 Gig hard drive and everything else you'd need besides a monitor, keyboard and mouse for around $200-300 (Canadian). In US dollars, you're probably looking at considerably less.

Something like that would be more than capable of running a better operating system that supports USB (like win98, 2000, or XP), and would be MUCH easier to deal with. You might find it REALLY slow transferring pictures off a camera with a P2. Also, you might not have much hard drive space to store stuff. I think they were only putting 600-800 MB HD's in those back then. Some memory cards for cameras are up to 128-256 MB, so a couple of those and your computer would be filled up.

Well, I'm done talking computers...hope this helped.

I agree on the Win 95 problem. Win 98 will definately run USB devices. A 2 or 3 mega-pixel camera will produce better then "quick and dirty" pictures if used properly. The key to getting good pictures with a digital is to provide proper lighting. If the camera has to "boost" the brightness (aka "gain" the picture will contain a lot of digital noise or the shutter will have to remain open so long that the picture is blurred.

Also, it is good to experiment with different cameras (in the store). It is also a good idea to research consumer reviews on the net before dropping a large amount of money. Mega-pixels don't mean a heck of a lot. A good 2.2 m-p camera with a high quality lens may produce a much nicer picture then a cheap 3 mega-pixel with a plastic lens.

Good luck... and remember, if it's $500 now, it'll be $350 in a few months. If you want the newest technology, it'll cost extra.

Another good point has been raised.

When looking into digital cameras, megapixels are important, but lens quality is also very important. A 2 MP Kodak would be better than a 2 MP by a company that doesn't have much experience in photography. I don't want to say a name here without actually trying out the cameras, but a Kodak 2MP 'should' be superior to an HP for this reason. Don't hatemail me if you have an HP and it's working great. I've used HP's and they can be great cameras.

Image quality is another thing. Most cameras have a few settings (ie. Good, Better, Best). You can fit tonnes of pics on a memory cartridge in "Good" mode, but if you want a nice detail shot and aren't too concerned about file size, go for "Best" mode.

Using "Best" is the only way to truly get your camera's MP rating. Anything other than that is a lower MP number. Most people I know who have digitals use theirs in "Good" which is around 1MP eventhough their camera is 2.2MP and they don't even realize they wasted a hundred bucks on getting the better camera....

Your point about the quality settings is very true. Many people never use the full resolution potential of their cameras either because they don't really know how to use the camera or because the images take up LOTS of space on their memory cards.

I'm also not a big fan of HPs. Personally I like the Cannons and Nikons. The Sony cameras with Carl Zeiss lenses are also very good. Zeiss makes some of the best lenses in the world.

Ok here it goes.......yes i have USB ports, gotta web camera that sucks but i do have one. I'm running Win98 and i know i know........a P2 yes i suck. But this was given to me by my most recent EX and he put it together so i have NO idea whats in it for space etc. All i know is once my good monitor blew up and sizzled, i've had non stop problems with my viewing. The monitor i have now is OLD, i mean OLD and sucks. I can't even view my own pics half the time. Oh yes i'm female. Typical female NO, but when it comes to computers well.....yes. LOL.

I've wanted a new computer ever since i saw the previews for WarCraft 3, Decent 3 and the newer Quake series. I LOVE those games and i'm also into graphics programs which of course i can't run right now. *pout* My biggest frustration is posting pics that i can't even see well myself, so i have no clue if they look good or not!

My trip out today didn't yield much as i have a migraine and just breathing hurts, so i couldn't really concentrate on what to look for. I do plan on getting a new computer after X-mas as i've signed up for so many hours i'm bound to bring home enough $$$ to buy a good one. I also need to buy 4 more 20 gal long tanks for Dot, Abby, Bronx and Nala, so ........i need lots of money LOL.

I really can't see straight, and i'm shaking like a leaf so i'm headed to bed. I most likely won't respond to anyone tonight if this doesn't let up.

Thanks for all your help Hopefully i'll be able to repay you all with some really cool gecko pics

I do feel better. Whimped out though and took meds. The pain is down to just being annoying now and i can see again. Hate the blind spots i get. I don't wish this pain on anyone. It takes alot out of me and its hard to focus.
