Question about baby blood reds, please.

Gene Oct 23, 2003 10:13 AM

I just got a pair of baby blood reds yesterday and the male doesn't look like I expected it to. It's patches of red are lighter than the females. The female's are almost maroon. There is some orange in between the blotches, not a lot of gray on the head, and the belly (ventral scales) are white down the center but on each side there is black checkering. I thought that was absent in blood reds. (It is absent on the female).

I wish I had taken a pic but I just didn't feel like putting the little guy through any more that day after shipping and all. I will gladly post one tomorrow if it would help.

My question is basically this. Can a real blood red have the black checkering on the ventral scales or do I perhaps have a cross or something.

Either way he is a beautiful animal and I like a lot.

Thanks

Neither of them has any checkering or marks what so ever on the belly, except for the orangey-red blending in on the sides, the belly's are both pure white. From what I've seen, and my own babies, the Blood's sides near the belly are patternless also.

I'm no expert on bloods by any means, but i'd say if it has check remnants it should be an outcross.

But I could be way off

Thanks for the help.

I have since found out that he is in fact not a blood red. To make a long story short it appears that one of his parents were and he is a het for.

You have some great looking animals yourself. I was looking at the pics you posted below. I hope your little anery gets better soon.

When you outcross a bloodred the f1 offspring look bloodred, but the dorsal has some checking, which indicates that they are outcrossed.
