Stuck Sheds (What to do?)

NateDiggity Oct 23, 2003 10:41 AM

I have a humid hide with moss that my two geckos rarely use. I also spray their hide once a week.

And they still get the occasional stuck shed. My girl has a little one on her upper eye lid. How do I remove it and prevent this from happening.

Thanks for your help,

Nate

when my geckos need some help i use tweezers gently...

If they dont go in there humid hide, than thats prolly the problem that they are having difficulty shedding... Mine didnt really go in theirs until i used a plastic shoe box with sphagnum moss... now they love it

To remove any stuck sheds soak her in a container filled with luke warm water... make sure it's not too deep, only up to the bottom of her belly or so.

After she is done shedding use your fingers to gently "rub" the shed off... after the soak it should come right off.

I would be careful with tweezers around the eye.

Modify the humid hide so that they'll start using it; otherwise, you'll keep having problems. It might not even be a bad idea to put in two humid hides.

If you have the hole on the top of the hide, make a new one with the hole on the side so it'll be easier for them to find. Don't make the hole so big that they can't really hide, but don't make it too small for them to go in through. It's possible that the hide you have is too wet or too dry to attract them.

What kind of moss are you using? The petstore kind usually doesn't work as well as peat/sphagnum moss from a garden store.

I am using sphagnum moss in a ziploc storage container(the throw away kind-like a rubbermaid). I do have the hole on top, so I will make another one and try the hole on the side.

Thanks for the help everyone
