cooling.

Dan_Binderup Oct 23, 2003 10:53 AM

Hey.
yesterday I posted af post concerning RI. just to follow up on that. the snake shed last night(not a very good one) I think the reason is due to the fact that a "sealinglist" was missing i the top of the cage, and I maybe overhandled the snake last week. (had a lot of friends on visit and all wanted to see).
although the snake still seems a little dry on it's back.
but I am still cooling them next week the female is (beside the dry back) i really good health (never missed a meal).
this leaves me to the questions:

1. I am going to separate the snake, so should they have access to bath during cooling?

2. should I continue misting during cooling?

3. should the snakes have access to a "hotspot" during cooling?

hopefully this would be the last questions before cooling.

best regards
Dan Binderup

Dan, Brazillians usually shed in one piece. If your Brazillian did not, then it usually is because the humidity is too low. The whistling usually also has to do with low humidity. I generally only cool snakes that seem perfect. If I had one that was making noise, I probably would wait to cool until the snake seems perfect. The reason I would wait, is because I have had perfect snakes that developed slight RI problems during cooling. My advice would be to wait on cooling, and focus on raising your humidity. Besides, I know people that sucessfully breed brazillians by cooling any month from September to December. My point is that there is no rush. You can try in December if things seem right then. The humidity should be at least 80-100% during the day. For future reference I have also included the answers to your questions.

1. I am going to separate the snake, so should they have access to bathe during cooling?

Many people have success breeding Brazillians both with large water dishes, and small. I cut the humidity to around 55-60 percent during breeding, and so I remove the large bathing tub and replace it with a 5 inch water dish. Only during shedding do I give the larger tub back.

2. should I continue misting during cooling?

Only if the humidity drops below 55%. With the lower humidity, you must watch out for RI, and if the snakes appear unhealthy then discontinue cooling and resume normal humitity and temps.

3. should the snakes have access to a "hotspot" during cooling?

I offer a hot spot during cooling that stays around 88-90. I only offer the hot spot for 4 hours daily.

Let me know if I can help in any other way. Howard.

Thanks for the reply.
humidity was back up immediately after putting the sealinglist back on. the female seems a little dry on it's back(not very much) but I am guessing this is because of the brief low humidity am I right. otherwise the animal seems tip top.

It is pretty hard to say if your Brazillian is in tip top shape. I would say at the least, if you post a question then there must be some doubt in your mind. I would call a vet before cutting the humidity, and cooling. If the snakes are not in tip top shape you might lose them. Cooling is stressful. Hope this helps some. Howard.

I hear you Howard.
But this was the first time ever the snake have had a bad shed, and I am almost certian that it was because tha humidity droped and like I said the humidity is back up and the animal seems perfect. my male is in shed now, so I am going the wait untill he have shed. so if she still seems perfect by that time I will cool them.
remember it is two weeks since the bad shed and there have been no problems since I raised the humidity. and I boosted the temp. a few degrees just in case. so I fell very confident that the snakes are up to it.

Hey again.
I called the guy I bought the snakes from (he bought them when they were hacthlings so knows them pretty well) which has a good amount of experince with snakes. and asked him if he would drop by and make an inspection of the snakes, and so he did and he also said that the snakes looked very healthy and seemed to be in perfect condition. so I will take that as a green light and cool them when the male sheds.
