New to Uroplatus!

Crested12 Oct 23, 2003 11:08 AM

Hey everyone i recently found out about this forum and i have been thinking about getting a pair of Uroplatus. I am not sure which species is the hardiest, and easiest to breed (and also coolest looking)and i was wondering if anyone could help me out? I breed Cresteds and Gargoyles and i work at a pet shop that specializes in reptiles so i would be able to handle all aspects of care. If you have any advice that would be great! also does anyone know any good sites for caprive Bred Leaftails? THanks ya'll -Ben

The only species of uroplatus that can be considered "hardy," and they are henkeli, but even then, that term is a bit of a stretch. There is not a single species of uroplatus that is easy to breed. There are some species (mainly henkeli) that are EASIER to breed when comparing them to other uroplatus. If you are going to get a uroplatus I recommend you start off with U.henkeli, and wait for a c.b. one to pop up. Ever once and a while you will see an ad for them in KS so keep you eye out.

The hardiest and coolest species of the uroplatus species is the newly discoved cork bark or spiny leaftail gecko. They are more hardy than hekels leaftail and also much cooler and fun to watch. For the most part hekels just sit around except when there's food, cork bark leaftails actually move around, mine run all around the cage. Unfortuatly their are few people breeding this species since it was just discoved but the future is promising already a few have been bred and they were just discoved over a year and a half ago. You might contact Neil Meister he had a few cb available last year.
