When should I see results of meds?

adiajsl Oct 23, 2003 01:26 PM

I have given my leopard two injections so far and am planning on giving her a third tomorrow. I give them every 48 hours. The doctor only gave me enough for 5 injections and I am only seeing a very slight improvement in her condition and I mean very slight. How long should it take before I see real results?

If you're talking about a respiratory infection it kinda depends on how severe it is. Lower resp. (Pneumonia) will probably take longer than Upper resp. With my rehab turtles (mostly box and water turtles), I've treated quite a number of Upper resp. inf. with Baytril and usually see improvement in 3-5 injections done everyother day. Five injections may not be enough. My vet and I hear that most vets give 7-10 injections for resp. infections. Some severe infections require even more injections than that. Sometimes a turtle won't respond to Baytril and other drugs have to be tried. Keep the turtle warm at least 86-89 degrees 24 hours a day. Even after recovery, you should keep the turtle at 85 degrees 24 hrs/day for several months. Good luck.

I concur. Although I have rarely used Baytril, 10 injections (but usually given on a DAILY basis) seems to be the standard in these forums. If this fails, try Amikacin at 10 mg/ kg every 48 hrs for a total of 6 doses. I have had many, many successes with this treament (including just last week on my longest-term captive turtle (20 years ).
