ZooMed Thermostat?

SittonJ Oct 23, 2003 03:16 PM

Okay maybe I'm a bit retarded but I can't figure out how exactly to use the ZooMed Thermostat for my gecko cage. If anyone out there has this please help me out! I know you plug the UTH into the thermostat control and then you attach the control to the side of the cage, but there is a really long probe that is attached to the control. Where does this probe go? The instructions say nothing about it and the diagram does not even include it. I feel like it shouldn't go in the cage for safety reasons - but if it stays outside, then its reading outside temps right? Also there are no numbers to set the temp to on the thermostat just low med and high marked on a dial sort of like a volume control for your stereo. I just don't get it - how is this supposed to regulate the set temp of the inside of the cage?????

I have the same thing. THe probe goes inside the tank, there's no safety issues to worry about, that's what it's ment for. Yes it would have been nice to have numbers on the dial, but since it doesn't, i just set it to a mediumish setting, and monitored the tanks temp, and how warm the bottom of the tank directly above the UTH got. (What subtrate are you using?) Then, if i noticed it shut off too soon (watch the grenn LED on the unit) i would turn the temp up, if it stayed on too long and it got to warm, i turned it down, after a couple of hours i was able to get it right. (i'm using papertowel sutrate, not sand, so the effects of the UTH are much quicker.)

Also, when placing the probe in the tank, get it as close to the bottom of the tank as possible, and as close to on top of the UTH without touching the substrate. This will ensure that it's monitoring the temperature at that level which is much more important then the temp at the top of the tank.

Hope that helped

Thanks! I'm using paper towels as my substrate so I'm guessing mine will react like yours did. Did you tape the probe to the side of the tank so that there isn't a cord dangling and it's secure?

nope, i just have it hanging in the corner of the tank. I haven't noticed a problem with this.
