BT and WT

Blissguy123 Oct 23, 2003 03:39 PM

I've been trying to figure, what is the difference between BT and WT. Also,i havent been able to find many people that breed WT, everything is always a BT or Ionides. Thanks for any responses.

Go to varanus.net and you can find links to goanna ranch there.

Albigularis and Ionides hail from different locals, so they therefore differ in markings.

But the BT grows a bit longer than the WT which is lighter colored. They can innerbreed which produces nice crosses. Goanna ranch produces beautiful banded WTs, and only 2 organizations have produced BTs that are captive bred (Proexotics- sold out currently, and Dan Turner-not sure if any since 2002). The rest are wild caught, except Rob Fausts crosses.
BTs are very beautiful as hatchlings and turn dark and dull as adults (and very large). WTs can range in colors and patterns from white, tan, brown, orange, reddish, yellow, gray, black, etc. The BT is black, gray, blueish, yellow, white, and some brown, with a different pattern. Either way one male BT was 7'3" long and San Diego zoo had a WT 6"10" long for many years. Keep in mind that Albigs are very strong imposing confident animals that eat darn near anything they can swallow.

Im gonna build her a 10x5x6ft cage some day. She has a foot and a half of dirt, 2 very large cork bark logs, a basking site that is 3 levels (underground, a tight sections 4"x 3ftx3ft, and a surface thats 24 hours a day at 134-165 dgrees f).

Hi

When you say "unfortunatly" that Sobeks enclosure is 8x4x4, how big is she exactly? I read an article in REPTILES by Dan Turner and he said an enclosure at least 6x4x4 is good and you ahve another 2 extra feet. I would think that was big enough but you know more than i do about BT's cause you have one so i'm not gonna argue. Another question is, do you ever let Sobek come out and walk around your house? You probibly just make sure she doesn't scratch up your sofa and La-Z-Boy right?
Thanks for all your replies, it is a big helop cause i'm trying to learn all i can about BT cause i think they are really cool monitors.
Thanks again

He uses 4x4x8 ft enclosures (the mag may have had a misprint), but his animals arent this big. Sobek is 6ft and 24.5lbs. IWould like to have her in a 10 ft long, 6ft high, 5ft wide cage so she has room to enjoy her cage and you get a much better temp gradient with a bigger cage. If you put 1-1.5ft of dirt you now have a cage 4.5 ft high, so now in order to put a climbing surface (say a piece of tree) you dont have alot of room really. 5ft wide (shes longer than that), is alright (limitation in houses) for indoors, and 10 ft combined you can put multiple basking spots, hiding spots, etc. Ive seen a 7ft 3 inch male BT one time (thats big!!). Albigs are large species of monitor and herculean strength allows them to move furniture or destroy it if not supervised. I take her and her half brother outdoors once a day to defecate, but 30 min-1 hour of exercise a day and some at night while living in a small cage is like being in a prison cell only alot less excercise and freedom. Try to imagine if you were them with limitations on space how would you want to live? My 2 albigs are BT/WT crosses.

Thanks for your repsonse. One final question is, are BT males usually smaller or larger than females?

Thanks for all your help

But on avaerage the males get longer and heavier. As well dont appreciate handling anywhere near as much, but they are all individuals and you could find a good friendly male by luck.
