Hey big J...

I'm not an expert on the western races...but man gophers clear to the pacific coast!

You probably got one crawling though your back yard right now dude!

They are very common in CA!

your right, there are tons of gophers here, i raise pigeons and i get 2-3 caught in my lofts every couple of months, in season anyway, they come in snag small babies and eggs then cant get back out of the wire, i kept 4 of the bigger ones last year ( one was almost 6 feet long.. looked old, lots of scars and abrasions) and 2 of them were female as they laid eggs, my incubator screwed up and i only got 7 babys out of 13 eggs but they were healthy and robust.. ane very nippy. i would like to know what race of gophers they are, i live right in the middle of california, if you take a map and put a needle exactly in the middle youll be stabbing my house.. lol. ive got alot to learn about pit's.

For range maps, check out Stebbins' field guide to the western reptiles and amphibians (Peterson field guide series). My guess is that you've got the Pacific gopher, _Pituophis catenifer catenifer_. But the San Diego gopher is in California, too.
