silica sand?

hepcatmoe Oct 23, 2003 05:03 PM

have been looking for a good substrate to use for my reptiles for a while. finally made it to the homedepot and bought some play sand. now that i have done this though i have heard that some types of sand are band, ie ones that are ground out of granite and have silica dust. im not sure if i spelled that right anyways, the sand does not have a label on it. how can i tell if it is appropriate for my lizards. what does silica sand look like? what should the right kind of sand look like? i went back the other day and looked at all the different kind of sands they hand and none of them were labeled as to what kind of sand it was. any help is appreciated.

Washed play sand is very benign stuff; I'm sure its fine. However, many reptiles are not sand-dwellers and may be better on another type of substrate. Make sure your reptiles are fit for sand in the first place. Also, ingestion is something to think about. Make provisions for the reptile to eat such that it isn't gulping mouthfulls of sand.
