tadpole identification????

fritzthefrog Oct 23, 2003 06:05 PM

I recently rescued i tadpole from a feeder fish tank, that i think is in the Rana species, but not sure exacty. It is a little under 3 inches long and is brown with tiny black spots all over. It looks just like the one in this pic at http://gallery.pethobbyist.com/index.pl?photo=48423&size=big but mine has little 1/4 inch legs. I hope it is a norhtern leo because i have had a great one (a male) for 3 years. Please tell me what you think this tadpole is and i was wondering also when i need to put something in the water for it to get out.

Thank you

I'd say Leo also, BUT it could be a Green frog too. It looks EXACTLY like the one tadpole I had and I was told it was a green frog.

Oh yeah... and you'll want to make a land area in the tank for it to get out when you see fully formed back legs and signs of front legs. You'll know the front legs are close when the back legs get about as long as the tail. The front legs can take as little as a couple days to another 2 weeks depending on the rate of growth once the back legs reach that length.

Hope this helps
