Red Stripes / Hypo Stripes / Red Stripe Albinos --- LONG

Hello,

Just thought I would throw our experience in here. When we first started out selectively breeding our leopards we wanted to create bold striped geckos with a bright body colour. For this we started with a great male stripe that had amazing body colour. We bred him to a number of females and produced stripes. It wasn't until the third generation that anything strange happened. In the third generation we hatched what has become our founding Red Stripe Stock. At the time we just called them "Striped Carrot Tails". They had nice defined stripes at hatching but the stripe gradually faded into the body colour. The body colour was not yellow but a nice deep orange colour. The fourth generation, the 2002 season, we hatched a whole lot of stripes and many of them kept their stripes into adulthood. Many of these had their stripe pattern turn colour from a brown at hatching to a solid orange / red colour. This was the year that we began to call them Red Stripes. Many of them still exhibited the carrot tail but we felt that this was secondary to the extraordinary stripe colour. We have posted on our web site a full history of the Red Stripe line, and if anyone is interested in getting into this project please contact us for more information.

Below is a picture of our fifth generation Red Stripe male that we are holding back for next season. He has a lot of orange on his tail and has amazing body colour that I didn’t seem to capture very well in this picture.

As for the genetics and what happens with "Hypo Stripes", as we bred these Red Stripes to Tremper Albinos last season we hatched all reduced pattern (aka hypo) banded geckos. The geckos hatched banded but quickly the bands faded. This season we bred our "double het Albino Red Stripes" back to each other. Out of four good eggs we hatched the following:

1 - Striped Albino Gecko
1 - Aberrant Patterned Gecko
1 - Banded (normal) Gecko
1 - Striped Gecko

The banded and aberrant geckos quickly lost much of their patterns and are now what I would call very reduced pattern or hypos. The Striped Albino has kept the full stripe as has the Striped Gecko.

Here’s hoping that all the above makes some sense :D

Matt.

That's amazing how the black/brown turns red so quick. I first saw this with my Hypo Carrot Tails, but it seems so much more dramatic with these stripes. Beautiful pictures.

Yeah, the black/brown starts to change with their very first shed. I have also seen this with the hypos and carrot tails, but nothing prepared me for these guys. Our fist pair hatched out with brown stripes all the way down their back and it was orange in what seemed to be no time at all!
